'A Smokey got me' says dragster John Force after ticket

Drag racing legend John Force, while on his way to Gainesville for Gatornationals, was stopped in Waldo for speeding.

During his legendary drag racing career, John Force has rarely been told he's going too fas

But that's what happened Wednesday night when he was driving from the Jacksonville International Airport to Gainesville for this weekend's Gatornationals.

He was stopped for speeding in Waldo.

"A Smokey got me," Force said Thursday at Gainesville Raceway.

Force said he tried to talk his way out of the ticket, but the police officer would have none of it and wrote him up.

"I told him I'd be racing this weekend," Force said. "But he gave me the ticket and said, ‘Get back in the car, and I'll see you at Gatornationals.' "

Force said he was clocked going 62 mph in a 45 mph zone.

This weekend, of course, he'll be going more than 300 mph at Gainesville Raceway — and it will be legal.
